The Durban’s Super Giants started the SA20 Season 4 campaign emphatically, as captain Aiden Markram led from the front to secure a memorable 15-run triumph over MI Cape Town in the curtain raiser at Newlands.
In a contest that turned into a full-blown run fest, the Super Giants showcased intent and composure to register our first win of the season in style.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, our batters made the most of ideal batting conditions, putting on a breathtaking display of strokeplay. The innings was set alight by the opening pair of Kane Williamson and Devon Conway, who stitched together an unbeaten 68-run partnership in the powerplay, immediately putting the pressure on the opposition.
Moreover, Conway was in sublime touch, racing to a magnificent half-century and eventually finishing with a scintillating 64 off just 33 deliveries.
The momentum never dipped as the middle order picked up seamlessly. Captain Aiden Markram played a blistering knock of 35 off 17 balls, injecting pace into the innings, while Evan Jones provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 33 off 14. With contributions coming from all corners, we posted a commanding 232/5 in 20 overs.
Defending the total, Eathan Bosch removed Rassie van der Dussen cheaply, setting the tone for the second innings. MI Cape Town fought back through a determined knock from Ryan Rickelton, who compiled a well-made 113, but the pressure never truly eased for the opposition.
The turning point arrived late in the innings when Evan Jones pulled off three terrific catches, swinging momentum firmly back in our favour and sealing a deserved victory.
With a confidence-boosting win under our belt, we now return to Kingsmead for our first home match of the season against MICT on 28 December at 5:30 PM SAST, aiming to make it two wins in as many opening games.
