With the SA20 2022-23 season scheduled to start from January 2023, Durban Super Giants will look to impress in the inaugural campaign, which is all set to mark a new chapter in South African cricket history.

The Durban-based outfit has left no stones unturned to put together a solid and well-balanced team.

Captain Quinton de Kock and West Indian bowler Jason Holder are the two big-name players in the squad and both players come with formidable experience in the format.

Quinton de Kock was an integral part of the Mumbai Indians team which won the 2019 and 2020 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The wicketkeeper-batsman top scored for his team in the 2019 edition while finishing just behind Ishan Kishan in the 2020 edition.

The South African ace also played a part in helping Barbados Royals reach the final of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 season in what was his debut CPL season. Both Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, who will be his teammates at DSG, were his colleagues for the Barbados team as well.

Holder, meanwhile, was part of the West Indies squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016 and also played a crucial role in helping Barbados Tridents win the CPL 2019. Holder has also captained his national team and his leadership qualities are revered in the game.

The team boasts a good local core, with South Africans like Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius and Keshav Maharaj all proven performers in the T20 format. De Kock is known to be solid atop while the versatile Klassen can anchor an innings as well as finish.

Kyle Mayers’ explosive nature can complement De Kock’s composure at the top of the order. The bowlers in the squad can have a swing with the willow too, meaning the team can bat deep.

The team seems to be lacking a proper world class wicket-taker in the pace department but Holder and Reece Topley’s ability to swing the ball will be useful in South African conditions.

Keshav Maharaj’s inclusion is a smart call as the spinner knows the Kingsmead Stadium pitch well being a local Durban boy. Durban Super Giants will play their home matches at the Kingsmead.

Head coach Lance Klusener is also from Durban and his familiarity with the pitch and conditions will be an added advantage to the team.

Overall, DSG boast a well-balanced and intelligently-constructed squad and have all the qualities to make a good impression in the inaugural SA20 season.
