Durban's Super Giants claimed their first win of the Betway SA20 when they beat MI Cape Town by five wickets with 21 balls remaining at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.

Towards the back end of their run chase there might have been some nerves in the dug-out, however all-rounder Keemo Paul put those to bed when he hit three sixes in five balls to get the Super Giants over the line.

It was a strong all-round performance from Lance Klusener's side who started emphatically with the ball when player of the match Kyle Mayers bowled the dangerous Dewald Brevis with the second ball of the match.

The home side consolidated reasonably well before Reece Topley, on debut for the Super Giants, picked up another big wicket when Ryan Rickelton was caught behind for fourteen.

Of the next 21 runs Rassie van der Dussen made just a single and then he holed out off Prenelan Subrayen before Sam Curran was trapped in front by Subrayen without scoring.

After seven overs MI Cape Town were 45 for four but Grant Roelofsen and George Linde combined to add 60 for the fifth wicket before Roelofsen was caught by Topley off the bowling of Jason Holder for 52.

Hardus Viljoen then picked up his first wicket when he dismissed Linde with the score on 105.

Cameo's from captain Rashid Khan and Delano Potgieter took the hosts to 152 for eight in their 20 overs.

In the same fashion as their opening match on Wednesday Quinton de Kock and Mayers started briskly with the pair putting on 35 in just 3.3 overs before the captain was caught at short fine-leg for eleven.

Mayers made a quick-fire 34 off 23 balls and then he feathered a Linde delivery to keeper Roelofsen.

The crucial partnership came from Wiaan Mulder and Heinrich Klaasen. Their stand was worth a crucial 56 runs and they were taking the Super Giants home but Klaasen was well caught for 36.

The men from Durban then lost Mulder for 30 and Dwaine Pretorius for a duck which left DSG vulnerable at 130 for five with five and a half overs to bat.

Paul then came to the wicket and struck three sixes in his 20 off eight balls as he and fellow Caribbean star Jason Holder took the Super Giants to their first win of the campaign.

After the Super Giants let the Joburg Super Kings off the hook following a strong start with the ball, on Friday the side managed to continue that strong momentum.

“I think we kept it simple today and we backed our plans and backed out gut feeling,” spinner Prenelan Subrayen said after the win.

“The guys did that from the start and Kyle getting Dewald (Brevis) up front set the tone for the bowling and then guys just followed through with that.

“Stats show that if you take wickets in the powerplay you generally come out on top in a game so it was good that we started well.”

Despite the fact that the Brevis wicket was important, Subrayen knew that the Super Giants bowlers had to be on top of their game with so many other strong batters in the MI Cape Town line-up.

“In a competition like this teams don’t really revolve around one player and it’s a make-up of eleven good players.

“This means that we have got plans for everyone throughout the game.”

Durban’s Super Giants return home to face the Paarl Royals in their next match on Sunday, 15 January. The first ball will be bowled at 13:30.
